  • Radar Detector & Laser Jammer Laws

    United States Radar Detector Laws

    Law varies from state to state, but detectors are generally legal in private vehicles under the Communications Act of 1934 and illegal in commercial vehicles by DOT regulation (49 CFR 392.71). They are however some exceptions:


    • Radar Detectors are Illegal in all vehicles in Virginia, Washington D.C. & U.S. military bases
    • Radar Detectors are illegal in all commercial vehicles over 10000 lbs under US federal law
    • Prohibitions against affixing items to windshield - "obstructing vision"): Minnesota, California


    United States Laser Jammer Laws

    Currently there are no US federal laws prohibiting the use of laser jammers but some states have passed their own laws against jamming police laser guns.

    Laser Jammers are illegal in the following states:

    California
    Colorado
    Illinois
    Minnesota
    Oklahoma
    South Carolina
    Tennessee
    Texas
    Utah
    Virginia

    Canada Radar Detector Laws

    Banned in the following: Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, the Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories

    Legal in the following: Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan
