Uniden 950 Review

Recently discontinued (now replaced with the new model number DFR7) is an an over all great performer and definitely in the top 5 RD's of all time.

For years GPS enabled RD's have gotten more and more popular due to more and more false alerts popping up everywhere so it made sense Uniden added a quality GPS based RD. However they also realized a lot of new cars utilize radar for there lain assist as well as other monitoring driving devises that cause our RD's to false so Uniden made there filtering a priority.

What makes the 950 such a great product is not only its GPS capability's but also its commitment to filtering out the unwanted falses that continue to grow. The icing on the cake is its top performing range in such a well rounded package. It gives RD's that cost hundreds of dollars more a run for their money.

Some of the great features of the 950:

Built-In GPS that provide manual locking out of stationary false alerts (called Mute Memory). It has a maximum of 100 lock outs.
RedLightCamera & Speed Camera Alerts
Advanced K Band Filter
Voice Notifications
Quiet Ride - muted alerts to below a set speed
Frequency of Radar Band
Current Speed - Battery Voltage - Altitude - Clock
MAX Speed Warning ability

Some of the specific things that stick out on the 950.

- The 950 is particularly strong on Ka 34.7 (rivals and sometimes beats the best) which is the most used radar band in the US, it also does very well with all other bands.
- With all the new falses from cars they seem to be committed to their very good filtering. The 950 is definitely one of the quietest RD's to falses of today. Not to say you wont get a false now and then, or that an occasional BSM will break through. But with its built in BSM filtering and GPS lock outs its a very tolerable RD.
- Voice Notifications, Quiet Ride, Mute Memory (lock outs) and its exceptional K band filtering are all really must have features.

Issues/improvements that are a must if Uniden wants to become the go to RD.

- The display needs to be more clear at communicating its great features like Mute Memory, Quiet Ride, brightness levels.
- GPS lock outs need more memory for those that have several destination areas like vacation spots, other homes or multiple places they work at.
- The ramp up needs to become more linear to properly assess a threat.
- K band sensitivity needs improvement for those who see K band threats a lot.
- Radar priority of signal, and its communication of multiple threats.
- They also need to improve the over all quality and refinement. But not really any more than other company's like Escort Cobra etc.

Some encounters I had with the 950:

A great unit especially for the low price it eventually fell to.

The k band false filtering on v 1.51 firmware is stellar if you can live with the 0.8 sec delay it introduces - very quiet around town :)

Even for ~$300 its a good unit. Just wish they did some much needed refinements. Maybe the next generation will.

What's the difference between the R3 ?

A whole lot. They really improved everything from the ground up. In general it does all the same stuff, but with better range and additional features. If i get my hands on one ill do a review here, but for now this thread provides some info on the R3/R1:
https://www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=62608 and this more specifically: https://www.rdforum.org/showthread.php?t=61830

Sorry i was unable to find any regular "reviews" of it yet.

I also got an Radenso XP...seems like an awesome QUIET little performer but also does seem to forget some mute outs...I hear there maybe a FW update coming to improve that..and I wish user could adjust the switch off time(s)...I'd like it to stay on...sometimes it stays on over night..sometimes it switches off after like 20 mins
